Brown University
Aquatics and Fitness Center

Architect

Robert A.M. Stern Architects

This new athletics facility at Brown University includes a three-level student fitness center, new Olympic-sized swimming pool and competition diving facility (seating up to 800 spectators), and a new student athlete strength and conditioning center.

Designed for LEED Gold Certification, the new complex supports a system of 168 photovoltaic/solar panels on the roof of the swim center that generate enough power to heat the million gallon pool and light the entire center. The aquatics center is Rhode Island’s very first hybrid (heat and power) installation, as well as the largest in the nation and the first on a college campus.

Odeh Engineers worked as part of a design-build team to tackle key project challenges, including a deep excavation for the pool into the groundwater and long-span exposed steel trusses designed for durability in the pool environment. The beautiful front facade features intricate brickwork and large structural arches.
