Project Profile
The Westin Hotel Expansion
New 34-story hotel and residential tower

In 2006, Odeh Engineers was engaged by the Procaccianti Group, one of the largest hotel owners in the United States, to develop a new flagship property in the heart of downtown Providence. The Westin Hotel and Residences is attached to the Rhode Island Convention Center.  The tower includes ground level lobby and restaurants, a six-level parking garage, ten levels of luxury hotel rooms, and 15 levels of high-end residential units topped with a three-story penthouse.

The Odeh team designed a cost-effective, flat-plate reinforced concrete system with jump-formed concrete shear towers to allow for a fast-track construction schedule. Completed in 2008, the building is one of the tallest cast-in-place concrete structures in New England.

Design Highlights
  • Foundation design included deep pile supported mats, with integral reinforcement to resist overturning forces at the base of the tall and slender tower. Foundations were required to bridge over city utility lines and other obstructions discovered during construction.
  • A steel framed penthouse “cap” creates an iconic gable shaped top for the tower that is central to the new Providence skyline.
  • Jump-formed cast-in-place concrete shear towers combined with simple flat-plate slabs and columns allowed for rapid construction
  • Numerous concrete transfer walls and beams are integrated into the parking and hotel levels to allow for multiple column layouts at different tower sections.
