Project Profile
Rhode Island Hospital
Bridge Building Expansion

Rhode Island Hospital is the largest hospital in southeastern New England, with the region’s only trauma facility. This challenging project created a major expansion of the hospital’s emergency department and operating room facilities. It also included a new underground parking structure and elevated ambulance drop-off plaza.

Phase 1 included the underground garage, new Emergency Department, a new surgery suites level, and a two-story high mechanical space. Phase 2, constructed four years later, included three new levels of bed floors, and a three-level cantilevered pedestrian bridge extending to a dramatic new 100’ tall elevator and stair tower adjacent to the building.

Design Innovation
  • The entire first and second floor structures were suspended from 25’ deep full-story trusses at the third floor. Hanger columns were used to minimize girder spans and allow for a shallow composite steel deck structure at the first level.
  • Location of the main trusses, combined with the use of concrete encased truss support columns, allowed for improved protection against progressive collapse from vehicle impact.
  • A permanent slab under drain system allowed use of slab-on-grade foundation design due to lower levels being several feet under the water table.
