Project Profile
Lahey Clinic Northshore Expansion
Medical Facility Addition

Lahey Clinic boasts the only emergency room and hospital in Peabody. This challenging project created a major expansion of the clinic’s existing clinical services, including an Expanded Cancer Center with Hematology and Oncology suites, and allows for new services such as Sleep Disorders Center, Spine Center, and Pain Center.

Phase 1 included a 63,500 square foot expansion of the existing clinical services wing at levels 1 and 2 and a new third floor placed atop the new and existing lower levels. Improvements were also made to the existing emergency department and main building. In phase 2, A new 2-story addition, which will house additional clinical services suites, is scheduled to be placed atop the Phase 1 floors.

Design Innovation
  • The new wing was built around the existing oncology wing and adjacent to the existing 5-story main building structure.  The existing Emergency Department as well as all existing clinical suites had to remain operational during all construction phases.
  • The linear accelerator in the basement of the existing main building required extensive shielding by either concrete, soil, or a combination thereof. Several different framing options were pursued in order to develop the most cost-effective solution.
  • Special care was taken to ensure that the future expansion can be accomplished while the Phase 1 as well as adjacent existing areas remain fully in use.
