New Academic Building on Waterfront Campus

Johnson & Wales University, the nation’s leading hospitality education school, sought to build a world class culinary education building that would also serve as the architectural cornerstone of its Harborside Campus in Providence.

The design team, which featured Odeh Engineers and Tsoi/Kobus Architects, created this visually striking modern structure, featuring four floors of teaching kitchens, faculty office space, and classrooms. The building includes a dramatic cantilevered section that elevates the occupied floors above a velocity flood hazard zone along the adjacent waterfront.

Design Highlights
  • Structural steel frame with composite slab on deck floor and roof structures.
  • Lateral force resisting system uses braced frames in combination with a concrete shear wall structure extending into the flood zone. The concrete walls were designed to withstand wave impact loads and to protect the structure from severe hurricane storm surges.
  • Poor soil conditions required the use of deep precast concrete pile foundations.
  • The design team used an Integrated BIM to carefully coordinate the architectural, MEP, and structural systems.
